Candy was written by Terry Southern and Mason Hoffenberg in the 1950s and first published in 1958 by Olympia Press in Paris, known for distributing controversial literature. Due to its explicit content, the novel was initially banned in multiple countries, including the U.S., but gained underground popularity. A revised and legally published edition appeared in the U.S. in 1964, becoming a bestseller and cementing its status as a countercultural classic.
