Quarto, xi, [3], 488pp. Three-quarter leather, gilt-ruled, tan cloth boards. Title in gilt on spine, five raised bands with decorative gilt compartments. Top edge gilt. Marbled endpapers. Wear to edges, corners, and joints, some rubbing to spine. No additional printings listed on copyright page. Solid text block, foxing to preliminary pages, faint toning to edges of plates. Complete with 24 plates and 20 vignettes, including a fold-out panoramic frontispiece. Each plate protected by tissue guard, as well as fold-out frontispiece.
Lady Louisa Tenison (1819-1882) traveled around the world frequently with her husband, photographer Edward King Tenison. Her first book, Sketches in the East (1846), cataloged their travels through the Middle East, Egypt, Syria, and Palestine. The two traveled to Andalucia and Castile, Spain from 1850 to 1852, publishing this work the following year.
