Octavo, xxiii, 307pp. Stated “Reprinted, August 1959” on copyright page. Bookseller label on front endpaper, ownership notation on front free endpaper. Top edge dyed blue. Clean text block, solid binding. Complete with 29 photographic plates, illustrations and a large fold-out map of the Pacific Theatre. In the publisher’s dust jacket, $6.50 on front flap, light sunning to spine, archival tape repairs to verso on closed tears, a very good example.

This work is signed by Admiral Chester W. Nimitz on his frontispiece portrait.

Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz (1885-1966) was the Commander in Chief of the U.S. Pacific Fleet during WWII. On September 2, 1945, he was the United States signatory to the surrender terms of Japanese forces, aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay. After WWII, he served two years as Chief of Naval Operations. He retired from active service in 1947 and moved to California. Admiral Nimitz died in 1966 and was buried at Golden Gate National Cemetery in San Bruno, California.
