First edition of Duty-Honor-Country: Two Memorable Addresses by General of the Army Douglas MacArthur, with an ALS from General Courtney Whitney.
Octavo, [1], 31pp. Brown cloth, title in gilt on spine. Stated “First Edition August, 1962” on copyright page. Frontispiece portrait by Joseph Cummings Chase, solid text block. Offsetting to endpapers. In the publisher’s dust jacket, no retail price at publication, touch of shelf wear, a bright near fine example.
This copy includes two ALS from General Courtney Whitney, outlining his speech to the “National Observer” in 1966. It also features a signed photograph at the presentation ceremony.
The two memorable addresses featured in this work are General MacArthur’s address to the United States Congress in 1951 and his address to the United States Military Academy (West Point), accepting the Sylvanus Thayer Award in 1962. After the untimely death of General MacArthur in 1964, General Whitney presented a framed copy of the address to The National Observer. He recorded his remarks for posterity, on Washington Hilton letterhead, and sent them to the publisher of The National Observer in 1966.
