Fabulous Hoosier is the story of Carl G. Fisher, who built Miami Beach into the tourist destination we now know in the 1920’s. Born near Indianapolis, Indiana, Fisher founded one of the first automobile dealerships in the United States and helped to build the Indianapolis 500 racetrack. To facilitate the introduction of the automobile to the general public, he initiated efforts to build the Dixie Highway, from Michigan to Miami. Building on his success in Indiana, he moved to Miami Beach to develop real estate, specifically the barrier island now known as Miami Beach. His fortunes were destroyed by the Great Depression, but his legacy was not forgotten.
