Octavo, [two volumes], xiv, 547pp; xvi, 540pp. Three-quarter red morocco with marbled boards. Titles in gilt over brown leather spine labels, raised bands with gilt ruling. All edges gilt. New endpapers. Complete with frontispiece portraits in both volumes, 52 plates, color plate in Volume II. Includes 3 fold-out maps laid into each volume at rear. Maps all in near fine condition, delicate at folds, a few tape repairs to folds. (Hosken, 189) An attractive set.

Sir Henry Stanley was famous for his exploration of central Africa. This book recounts his journey to relieve Emin Pasha, the besieged Governor of Equatoria. The book was an international best seller, selling 150,000 copies shortly after publication in 1890.
