Following his loss at the 1976 Republican National Convention in August, California Governor Ronald Reagan toured the country supporting fiscally conservative Republican candidates. This included John Ashcroft, who would win the election to be the Attorney General of Missouri. Following a second term as Attorney General, Ashcroft would then win consecutive terms as the Governor of Missouri. In 1994, he ran and won Missouri’s Senate seat. In 2001, newly elected President George W. Bush nominated Ashcroft to serve as the 79th Attorney General of the United States.
