The first edition of John D. Rockefeller: The Heroic Age Of American Enterprise, signed by the author, Allan Nevins.

Octavo, [two volumes], xiii, [1], 683pp, [1]; x, 747pp, [1]. Red cloth, title stamped in gilt on the spine. The first printing, with “Scribner’s A” on the copyright page of both volumes. Both volumes with frontispiece portrait and numerous illustrated plates. Both volumes with the bookplate of “Charles A. Jones” on the front pastedown. Solid text block, both near fine examples. Housed in the publisher’s issued slipcase, solid hinges, light shelf wear to panels.

This work is signed by the author, Allan Nevins, on the half-title of Volume I.

John D. Rockefeller Jr. (1874-1960) was an American financier and the only son of John D. Rockefeller. Rockefeller was the founder of Standard Oil Company in 1870, which he ran until 1897. At its peak, Standard Oil controlled 90% of all oil in the United States, making the Rockefeller family the richest American family of all time. Rockefeller Jr. was one of the largest real estate holders in midtown Manhattan, with the construction of Rockefeller Center in 1931. Rockefeller Jr. was the father of six children, including Vice President Nelson Rockefeller.
