Jean Lafitte (1780-1823) and his brother Pierre smuggled and sold goods in New Orleans until the Embargo Act of 1807 when they moved to an island off the coast of Louisiana. The operation was invaded in 1814, but the Lafittes received a pardon by helping Andrew Jackson defend New Orleans during the War of 1812.
