Octavo, xiv, 358pp. Blue cloth, title stamped in gilt. No additional printings, with “Published January 1944” on copyright page. Sunning to cloth spine, light soiling to cloth. Paired with the publisher’s dust jacket, $3.00 retail price on front flat, a few short closed tears to top edge, bright illustrations, a near fine example. This copy is inscribed to Kermit “Kim” Roosevelt Jr., an American intelligence officer who helped secure Lend-Lease support to China during World War II. Inscription reads: “For Kim, In memory of our happy association. Ed.”

Kermit Roosevelt Jr. (1916-2000) was the grandson of President Theodore Roosevelt and a career intelligence officer in the Central Intelligence Agency. Following World War II, he played a central roll in Operation Ajax, the 1953 Iranian coup d’état instigated by the CIA and deposed the democratically elected Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh.
