Octavo, [two volumes], xi, 596pp; xi, 594pp. Black cloth, titles in silver on spines, signature of the author in silver on front covers. Stated first edition in both volumes. Top edge dyed green. Both volumes with solid text blocks, faint offsetting to endpapers, touch of wear to cloth panels. Front hinge of Volume I starting, but stable. In publisher’s first state dust jackets, both with $5.00 on front flap, bright illustrations, closed tears on spine and front hinge. Mailing label affixed to rear endpaper of Volume I. (Burns 0016) Housed in custom gray cloth slipcase.
Inscribed by President Harry S. Truman in Volume I: “With kind regards to Barrett C. Kiesling from Harry Truman 11/14/55.”
Barrett C. Kiesling was the Director of Publicity for MGM Studios from 1928-1960. During his time at the studio, he wrote the popular 1936 trade book titled: “How Talkies Are Made,” which took him on a nationwide speaking tour.
