Octavo, [two volumes], xi, 596pp; xi, 594pp. Black cloth, titles in silver on spines, facsimile signature of the author in silver on front covers. Lacking “first edition” statement in both volumes. Both volumes in fine, unread condition. Includes the publisher’s dust jackets, tape repair to verso of Volume I, otherwise fine. Also includes the scarce publisher’s cardboard display box, advertising the $4.50 retail price for the complete set. (Burns 0016) A fine example.
The Memoirs by Harry S. Truman were published separately in two volumes, the first edition of Volume I appearing in 1955 with a retail price of $5.00 and “first edition” stated on the copyright page. The second volume followed in 1956, also priced at $5.00 and stating “first edition” on the copyright page. A combined set, known as the Kansas City Edition was released in 1956, with a retail price of $8.50, if purchased as a set. The Kansas City Edition had distinctive dust jackets and endpapers. This two-volume set was released in 1958 by the publisher, for a combined price of $4.50 and with a cardboard display sleeve for booksellers.
