First edition of Mission of Gravity by Hal Clement.
Octavo, 224pp. Yellow hardcover, title in blue on spine. Stated “first edition” on copyright page. Solid text block, faint soiling to yellow boards, a near fine example. In publisher’s first state dust jacket, $2.95 on front flap, soiling to spine, closed tear on rear panel, a very good example. (Pringle, 15) An attractive example.
This novel was one of three works by Clement, which were first serialized in Astounding Science Fiction magazine [Needle (1950), Iceworld (1953) and Mission of Gravity (1954)]. Three sequels to Mission of Gravity were published, a novel titled Star Light (1970), a short story in 1973 called “Lecture Demonstration” and a short story in 2000 titled “Under.” Hal Clement was inducted into the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame in 1998. This novel was nominated for a “Retro-Hugo” Award in 1954.
