Comments: Anson Mills was a captain during the western campaign of the Civil War. While his military career was undistinguished, he began to develop a cartridge belt while on duty commanding the Indian Wars. His belt design was eventually adopted by the US Army and Mills made a small fortune on its production. Author John Neihardt was best known for this novel Black Elk Speaks, originally published in 1932. It was republished numerous times and found increased readership during the 1960s, with popular interest in native American historical research.
