Orville Wright (1871-1948), born in Dayton, Ohio, was one of the pioneering aviators who, along with his brother Wilbur, invented and flew the first powered airplane. The Wright brothers conducted much of their early research and experiments in their bicycle shop in Dayton, eventually leading to the historic first flight in 1903 at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. The Wright Brothers returned to Dayton, where they continued to work on the Wright Flyer II and other patented aviation technologies.
