Octavo, [two volumes], 584pp [Vol. I]; 647pp [Vol. II]. Publisher’s deluxe full black morocco, title in gilt on spines, raised bands, stamped in blind with elaborate borders. All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers, decorative gilt turn-ins. Both volumes with the bookplate of Warren Olney, Jr. in both volumes, associate justice of the California Supreme Court. Both volumes with light wear to leather, Volume II with faint crease along spine. Both volumes free of any markings or notations. Frontispiece portraits of Grant with tissue covers. Both volumes complete with over 50 illustrations and maps, including the fold-out surrender documents in Volume II (Dornbusch II: 1986) (Eicher 492).

Published shortly after his death, the Personal Memoirs of President Grant are held in high regard by historians and general readers alike. President Grant was initially opposed to writing his memoirs but wished to leave his family financially stable after his death. The books were sold in multiple formats, ranging in price from $3.50 to $12.00 in 1885.
