Comments: William M. Evarts served as Secretary of State, U.S. Attorney General and Senator from New York. He is best remembered for his service during the Andrew Johnson administration, where he served as chief council for the president during his impeachment trial. He delivered the closing remarks, which secured his acquittal. Evans served as Secretary of State for President Rutherford B. Hayes
