John Sherman (1823-1900) was an American politician who served in several key government positions, including Secretary of the Treasury (1877-1881) under President Rutherford B. Hayes and Secretary of State (1897-1898) under President William McKinley. As Secretary of the Treasury, Sherman was instrumental in the implementation of the Specie Payment Resumption Act of 1875, which aimed to restore the gold standard and stabilize the post-Civil War economy. During his tenure as Secretary of State, although brief, he dealt with significant foreign policy issues, including tensions with Spain that preceded the Spanish-American War. Sherman also had a long legislative career, serving as a U.S. Senator from Ohio and as a member of the House of Representatives, where he was a key advocate for economic and monetary reforms, including the Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890.
