Description

Signed cabinet card from Charles Lewis Tiffany, founder of Tiffany & Company, celebrating “my eightieth birthday, Feby 15th, 1892.” Cabinet card measures 4.25″ by 6.5″. Framed with nameplate, under museum glass. Frame measures 21″ by 19.5″. Some trivial spotting to the photograph, otherwise fine. Includes details of the unframed cabinet card, with photographs of the verso, in sleeve on back of frame. Details of the museum glass on back panel as well as documents from University Archives also included. Provenance: Sold unframed in 2013 by Heritage Auctions, then RR Auctions in 2017.

Comments: Charles L. Tiffany (1812 – 1902) was the founder of Tiffany & Co. in 1837. He was considered the preeminent American jeweler of the nineteenth century. As he built additional retail locations in Paris and London, he laid the foundation for a company that would survive into the 20th Century.
