First edition, first issue of Tales of a Wayside Inn by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Octavo, v, [3], 225pp, [3], 22pp ads. Publishers brown cloth, title in gilt on spine. Top edge gilt. Wear along edges of the spine with some fraying of the cloth. Previous ownership inscription in pencil on front free end paper, dated Nov. 29, 1863, only days after publication. Publishers first edition, first state, with “Tales Of A Wayside Inn” appearing unpriced and described as “Nearly Ready” on page 11 of the advertisements. (Bal 12136). An overall very good copy.
Comments: Published in 1863, Tales of a Wayside Inn is a collection of poems by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. It contains one of Longfellow’s best known poems, Paul Revere’s Ride.
