Paul Simon (1928-2003) was an Illinois Democrat who served in the House of Representatives from 1975 to 1985 and in the Senate from 1985 to 1997. Simon wrote twenty-two books throughout his career, and was known for his traditional horn-rimmed glasses and bow tie. In a tribute to Simon, former President Bill Clinton said he was “beyond question, one of the most remarkable public servants I ever knew.” George McGovern (1922-2012) was the Democratic candidate in the 1972 presidential election, losing to incumbent President Richard Nixon. McGovern also served as Senator from South Dakota from 1963-1981.
