Octavo, [vi], 421pp, [2pp ads]. Publisher’s red cloth, title in gilt on front cover and spine. Shamrock pattern stamped in black. No additional printings listed on copyright page. Slight lean to text block, wear to cloth at corners and edges of spine. Split to rear hinge, still sound. A very good example. Complete with eleven full page plates, including frontispiece. Tess of the D’Urbervilles was first published by James R. Osgood of London in 1891 in three volumes. (Purdy 67) This is the first American edition, published by Harper and Brothers in January, 1892. A secondary “New and Revised Edition” was published in May 1892, and was expanded from 421 pages to 455. (Purdy 76)
