Octavo, xvi, [17] – [275], [1], [4pp ads]. Blue woven cloth, title and illustrations on covers. All first issue points present. Half title printed separately from frontispiece, with “THE” in 10-point font. Pale peach endpapers, with triple flyleaves. Catalogue dated December 1st, 1876 at rear. Contemporary gift inscription in pencil, dated 1876. (BAL 3369) Professionally repaired copy, with resewn text block, cloth at spine laid down over new cloth. Intermittent soiling to text. Some loss of gilt on spine, soiling to cloth on back panel. Housed in custom blue leather clamshell case, title in gilt on spine. An exceptionally scarce first issue of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.
