Octavo, [8], 517pp, [1]. Full green leather, title in gilt on spine, decorative raised bands, presidential seal on cover. The recipients name in gilt on front cover. Includes laid-in card from the White House. Inscribed on presidential bookplate affixed to front endpaper: “Gen. Colin Powell, Merry Christmas 1991. George Bush.”
The Americans: The National Experience was awarded the Francis Parkman Prize in 1973. This copy was specially bound in full leather for intimates of the Bush family in 1991, including his son Neil Bush, the head usher of the White House Rex Scouten, former President Jimmy Carter and this copy inscribed to Colin Powell.
Colin Powell (1937-2021) served as the United States Secretary of State during the George W. Bush administration, the first African American to hold the post. He also served as National Security Advisor to President Ronald Reagan (1987-1989) and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 1989-1993. Powell was discussed as a possible Republican presidential contender in 1996 and 2000, but he declined to run both times. He passed away in 2021, survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Alma Powell.
