The Beaver Men: Spearheads of Empire was published in 1964 by Hastings House, part of Sandoz’s series on the American West. The limited edition was produced and distributed by James F. Carr. The Beaver Men explores the role of fur traders and trappers-particularly those involved in the beaver trade-in the westward expansion of the United States during the 18th and 19th centuries. It was Sandoz’s final completed work before her death in 1966 and followed earlier volumes such as Crazy Horse and Cheyenne Autumn.
