Description

The Cincinnati, Covington, Newport And Fulton Directory for 1840, the first with a “Colored” listing of African American business and citizens of Cincinnati.

Octavo, 520pp. Rebound in quarter red morocco, marbled boards, decorative bands, title stamped in gilt over black morocco label. New endpapers. Complete with ten plates. Thomson’s Bibliography of Ohio notes a “Folding Plan of the City,” but no known copies have been documented with this plate. Scattered foxing and light soiling. Top quarter of pages 43-46 cut, bottom half of 55-56, lacking the 25-26 leaf. Solid binding, a very good example.

(American Imprints, 54966) (Morgan 3622) (Sabin 13085) (Thomson 196(7)).

This directory features one of the first “Colored” indexes of 300 prominent African American citizens of the city of Cincinnati, with their addresses and state of origin. The population tables detail the ethnic background of citizens, and includes a “Table of Nativity,” outlining which state or country the citizens of the region arrived from. A scarce directory, with only two appearing at auction since 1950.
