Description
The first edition of The Collected Poems of Frank O’Hara, with the suppressed first state dust jacket by Larry Rivers.
Quarto, xxix, [1], 586pp, [6]. The first state binding, with cream cloth, title and author stamped in gilt. The second issue binding was nearly identical, but the covers were stamped in blind. Stated “First Edition” on the copyright page. Illustrated endpapers. Light rubbing along lower edge of text block. This copy appears unread.
In the publisher’s suppressed first state jacket, $17.50 on the front flap, “10/71” date code on rear flap, light shelf wear, bright illustrations, a near fine example. The first state jacket, designed by Larry Rivers, was distributed to subscribers and advance reviewers. It was suppressed because of the depiction of a nude male on the front cover and was replaced with a typographic jacket.
The Collected Poems of Frank O’Hara, published posthumously, shared the 1972 National Book Award for Poetry.
