Description

First edition of The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, in a first state dust jacket.

Octavo, [vi], 218pp. Dark green cloth, title in gilt on spine, blind stamped title and author on front cover. Faint residual dust along top edge of text block. Scribner’s seal on copyright page. Housed in custom cloth clamshell. All six second issue points are present, including: “echolalia” on page 60, “southern” on page 119, “sickantired” on page 205, and “Union Station” on page 211. Clean text throughout, solid text block, a fine example. (Bruccoli A11.1.b)

In the publisher’s first state dust jacket, $2.00 on front flap, lowercase “j” on rear panel, corrected with blue stamp. This near fine dust jacket has no repairs or improvements, trivial shelf wear to rear panel, shallow chipping along top edge, some loss at top edge of spine, a short closed tear along top edge at the spine, bright illustrations. (Bruccoli A11.1.a)

An exceptional piece.
