The Natural, a novel by Bernard Malamud published in 1952, is a baseball-themed work of fiction that tells the story of Roy Hobbs, a gifted but flawed ballplayer whose career is derailed by personal failings and misfortune. The Natural was Malamud’s debut novel and was later adapted into a 1984 film of the same name starring Robert Redford.
