The Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection by Charles Darwin, the sixth edition, published in 1880, the last edition published by John Murray during Darwin’s lifetime.
Octavo, xxi, [1], 458pp, [1]. Publisher’s pebbled green cloth, stamped in blind, title in gilt on the spine. Stated “Sixth Edition, With Additions and Corrections To 1872.” This work being the “twenty-second thousand” printing, after the first in 1859. This work is complete, with a folding lithographic plate. Light foxing to endpapers and half title, text block generally clean. Previous ownership inscription in blue pen on the half-title. Solid text block, bright cloth, a near fine example. (Freeman 405) This edition was printed from stereos of the third issue of the final definitive text, with edits by Darwin.
On the Origin of Species was first published in 1859 by John Murray. The first publication was limited to 1500 copies. This sixth edition was the first to change the title from “On The Origin of Species” to “The Origin of Species.”
