In 2019, it was announced that Jane Campion would write and direct a film adaptation of the book, starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Kirsten Dunst. The film won awards for Best Direction at the Venice International Film Festival, with anticipation that it will garner Oscar nominations in 2022.
