The Power of the Dog was first issued in 1967 to rave reviews by The New York Times, but received limited commercial success. It was reissued in 2001 by Little, Brown & Company, with a new afterword by Annie Proulx. In 2019, it was announced that Jane Campion would write and direct a film adaptation of the book, starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Kirsten Dunst. The film won an award for Best Direction at the Venice International Film Festival, and it has received 12 Oscar nominations in 2022.
