Nelson Rockefeller (1908-1979) served as the 41st Vice President of the United States with President Gerald Ford. He was previously the Governor of New York from 1959-1973. He ran for the Republican presidential nomination three times (1960, 1964 and 1968), representing the more moderate wing of the party. When Ford assumed the presidency in 1974, he nominated Rockefeller to serve as his Vice President, angering many conservative Republicans. Ford chose Bob Dole as his running mate in 1976 to appeal to the conservative base, dropping Rockefeller. Ford later called this choice “one of his biggest mistakes.”
