Tom Wolfe’s The Right Stuff was first published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux in 1979, based on Wolfe’s earlier magazine reporting on the Mercury astronauts and the culture of early American test pilots. It was adapted into an Academy Award-winning movie in 1983, starring Sam Shepard, Ed Harris, Scott Glenn and Dennis Quaid.
