Description
The first edition of Trail of a Tradition by Senator Arthur H. Vandenberg, inscribed to New Deal operative and Washington power player, Emil Hurja.
Octavo, xxii, [2], 405pp. Blue cloth, title stamped in gilt on spine. No additional printings noted. Light soiling to cloth, booksellers stamp on rear endpaper, bookplate on front endpaper. In the publisher’s fine dust jacket.
Inscribed on the front endpaper: “For Emil Hurja, An erstwhile friendly enemy who is now a friendly friend. With warmest regards and best wishes. Arthur H. Vandenberg. Washington. Dec. 13, 1938.”
Emil Hurja was the executive director of the Democratic National Committee from 1932-1937, before switching political parties. This inscription from Senator Vandenberg, dated 1938, coincides with his change of political affiliation. Hurja would run for congress in Michigan in 1948 but lost the election.
