Richard Rummell (1848-1921) was trained at the Royal Academy of Arts in London before immigrating to the United States. His campus illustrations, often created using copperplate etching, were commissioned by the New York firm, Littig & Company, between 1890 and 1915. He produced over 40 detailed campus views, including Michigan, Harvard, Princeton, and Columbia. Rummell’s works are notable for their meticulous detail and his technique of rendering bird’s-eye views, as it required both artistic skill and an understanding of architectural design.
This work includes the following landmarks at the University of Michigan: Detroit Observatory, Old Haven Hall, University Hall, Tappan Hall, Alumni Memorial Hall, the President’s House and Newberry Hall.
