Description
First edition, first issue of The Wilderness Hunter by Theodore Roosevelt.
Octavo, [3], xvi, 472pp, [1]. Publisher’s olive linen, title in gilt on spine, title embossed on front cover in brown. This is binding Variant A. Light rubbing to the tips of the spine, faint toning and soiling to cloth, otherwise a fine example. Solid text block. Complete with frontispiece portrait and 23 full-page illustrations throughout text. From the library of Charles L. Gilcrest, with his bookplate on the front pastedown. This is the third issue of the first edition in 1893, with an ornamental headpiece on page xiii, and lacking the “edition de luxe slip,” found in the first two issues.
(Cole & Vail, A13a)
An attractive example.
The first issue of the book preceded the “edition de luxe” of The Wilderness Hunter, which was limited to 200 copies and signed by Theodore Roosevelt. This trade edition was issued at $3.50, which sold out quickly. It was followed by five printings in 1893, including the edition de luxe.
