A Whig politician, Edmund Burke (1729-1797) served as a Member of Parliament in the British House of Commons from 1766 to 1794. Burke led the “Old Whigs,” the conservative side of the party that greatly opposed the French Revolution. His Reflections on the Revolution in France, published in 1790, became one of his best-known works. Today, Edmund Burke is remembered as the philosophical founder of conservatism.
