Octavo, [viii], 262pp, [2]. Black cloth, author’s signature stamped in gold on front cover, title stamped in gilt over green on spine. A first printing, with Scribner’s “A” and publisher’s device on copyright page. Owners blindstamp on front free endpaper. Light rubbing to head of spine, offsetting to endpapers, solid text block. In the publisher’s first state dust jacket, $2.50 on front flap, portrait of Hemingway on back panel by Joris Ivens, two small archival tape repairs to verso, shallow chipping at heel of spine, faint shelf wear to covers, a bright, very good example. The first printing of To Have and Have Not was released on July 27th, 1937, with an initial print run of 10,130 copies. The book rose to fourth on the National Bestseller list, requiring a second printing of 15,690 copies, released on September 23, 1937.
