During World War II, Admiral Arleigh Burke (1901-1996), gained fame as a destroyer squadron commander, notably in the Solomon Islands campaign, where his leadership earned him the nickname “31-Knot Burke.” After the war, Burke was appointed Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) in 1955 by President Eisenhower, a role he held for an unprecedented three terms until 1961. As CNO, Burke implemented signifigant strategic and technological innovations in the Navy. In retirement, the USS Arleigh Burke (DDG-51), an Aegis Class Destroyer, was commissioned in his honor in 1991-only the fourth time a naval vessel was named after a living figure.
