James Kirke Paulding (1778-1860) was an American writer and politician during the early 19th century. Born in New York, Paulding initially pursued a career in law before transitioning to literature. He co-authored several popular works with Washington Irving, including “Salmagundi” and “Knickerbocker’s History of New York.” Paulding held various government positions, including Secretary of the Navy under President Martin Van Buren.
