Both volumes with solid text blocks, solid hinges. Bookplate in each volume on second free endpaper. Conservative leather restoration at heel of spine of Volume II. Both volumes complete, with steel engraved frontispieces, 52 full page plates, and a color plate in Volume II. Includes 3 fold-out maps laid into each volume at rear. Sir Henry Stanley was famous for his exploration of central Africa. This book recounts his journey to relieve Emin Pasha, the besieged Governor of Equatoria. The book was an international best seller, selling 150,000 copies shortly after publication in 1890.
