Sepia toned photograph of Rio de Janeiro coastline. Full piece measures 11.5″ x 10.” A hint of wear at corners, near fine condition. Residue from previous mounting along upper edge of verso. Inscription reads: “A merry Christmas, rolling up from Rio, – 1928 / Lou Henry Hoover / Herbert Hoover.”
Herbert Hoover (1874-1964) was elected president with an overwhelming victory over Al Smith of New York in 1928. As president-elect in late 1928, Hoover toured various Latin American countries, including Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Chile, and Argentina. His trip ended in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from December 21-23, where the photo for this Christmas card was taken. Hoover was inaugurated a few months later, March 4, 1929. Lou Henry Hoover (1874-1944) traveled with her husband frequently and made consistent radio broadcasts to the United States in her time as First Lady.
