Signed first edition of Freedom’s Plow by Langston Hughes, inscribed to philanthropist and NAACP member Amy Spingarn.
Small octavo, 16pp. Original paper wraps, title printed in blue on front cover. Bound at center with staples, as issued. Solid text block, faint foxing to covers, a near fine example. This is the first issue, printed in blue ink with a “For Victory” war bond stamp on rear cover. (Bruccoli & Clark III, 160) Housed in a custom blue morocco clamshell, title in gilt on spine.
Inscribed by Langston Hughes on the verso of the front cover: “For Amy Springarn – With all my best, Sincerely, Lanston.”
Amy Spingarn and her husband, Joe, were white philanthropists and art collectors. Amy painted numerous prominent Black cultural figures throughout her career, and spent nearly forty years on the NAACP Board of Directors.
