The 1855 Mitchell’s Universal Atlas, published by Cowperthwait, Desilver & Butler, in Philadelphia.
Folio, [74 plates]. Three quarter polished red morocco, marbled boards, title in gilt on label affixed to front panel. Measures 17″ x 14″. Front hinge reinforced, donation bookplate on front endpaper. Faint damp stain to front and rear endpaper, no impact to maps. Occasional toning to plates, faint spotting to a few plates, a bright example.
This work is complete with 71 hand colored lithographed maps, with three double page maps, for a total of 74 plates. Includes a city plan of Washington, D.C. Frontispiece map of the “Lengths of the Principal Rivers in the World.”
This work is an early issue of the 1855 Mitchell’s Atlas, with Pierce County, Minnesota (Plate 35), before it was divided into Pierce, Davis, and Renville Counties. Includes the Arkansas population map, not the table of steamboat routes. Lacking the “New Map of Nebraska, Kansas, New Mexico, and Indian Territories,” which follows Plate 37 in the first issue.
