General Philip H. Sheridan (1831-1888) was known for his aggressive leadership in major Civil War campaigns, such as the Shenandoah Valley Campaign of 1864, using scorched earth tactics to cripple Confederate forces and resources. Sheridan also commanded the Cavalry Corps of the Army of the Potomac, contributing to the defeat of General Robert E. Lee’s forces at Appomattox. After the war, he oversaw military operations in the Reconstruction South and the Indian Wars, including the campaigns against the Plains Indians. Sheridan became General of the Army in 1883.
