Octavo, xiii, 434pp. Full green cloth, title in gilt on front cover and spine. Stated “Household Edition” on title page. Front hinge starting, but stable, solid text block. Cloth rubbed along edges of spine and corners of covers. Text remains clean. Newspaper clippings affixed to second free endpaper.
Includes a clipped signature from John Greenleaf Whittier pasted to front free endpaper. Inscription reads: “To D. Bethune Duffield from his friend John G. Whittier 8th mo. 14 1879.” Additional handwritten letter affixed to front flyleaf from Whittier to a “friend.”
Divie Bethune Duffield (1821-1891) was a Detroit lawyer, fellow poet, and friend to John Greenleaf Whittier.
