Description

The “Amontillado” edition set of The Works of Edgar Allan Poe, individually signed and dated by the publisher in 1884.

Octavo, [eight volumes]. Finely bound in three quarter red morocco. Five raised bands, title in gilt on spine with gilt-embellished compartments. Marbled paper covered boards, with marbled endpapers. Includes half-titles, engraved title pages with vignettes, frontispiece with tissue guard in each volume. Top edges gilt. Solid text blocks, faint wear to corners and edges. Thin scratches to cover of Volume I.

One of 315 copies, this set listed as number 95, signed by the publisher, and dated “April 21 – 1884.” (BAL 16228) A scarce set in this condition.

This scarce set includes illustrations and etchings by Gifford, Church, Piatt and others. It includes a facsimile first draft of “The Bells,” and letters from Poe. Notable pieces written by Edgar Allan Poe include: The Tell-Tale Heart, The Fall of the House of Usher, The Raven, The Black Cat, The Cask of Amontillado, The Pit and the Pendulum, and The Murders in the Rue Morgue.
