Octavo, xxvi, 306pp. Blue cloth, title stamped in gilt on spine. Stated “Published By The Viking Press In September 1950” on the copyright page. Light rubbing and wear to spine, solid text block. Illustrated endpapers. In the publisher’s first state dust jacket, $4.50 on front flap, chipping along both edges, bright illustrations. Signed on the title page: “For my friend “Bill” Bingham / with admiration for a grand person. We hope the Binghams will soon join the Asheville colony. Robert Eichelberger / March 1957.”
General Robert L. Eichelberger (1886-1961) commanded the Eighth U.S. Army during World War II, and led successful campaigns in New Guinea, the Philippines, and the occupation of Japan. A graduate of West Point, he served in World War I before rising through the ranks. Eichelberger was instrumental in securing key victories, including the Battle of Buna-Gona in 1942-1943. After the war, he oversaw U.S. occupation forces in Japan before retiring in 1948.
