Second edition of One Hundred Fables, written and compiled by James Northcote, together with the Second Series of Fables, published posthumously in 1833.
Octavo, [two volumes], viii, 272pp, [4]; lx, 248pp, [4]. Three-quarter brown morocco, marbled paper-covered boards. Five raised bands, title in gilt on spine. Top edge gilt, marbled endpapers. Finely bound by Stern & Dess, with bindery imprint on verso of front endpaper. Solid text blocks, a near fine set. Features a frontispiece portrait of author James Northcote in Volume I. Decorated with numerous wood-engraved vignettes and initials designed by Northcote.
James Northcote originally published series one of his Fables in 1828. This second edition was published in 1829. A second series of Fables was posthumously published in 1833, just two years after Northcote’s passing in 1831. The woodcuts featured in both works were completed by William Harvey and taken from Northcote’s own designs.
